Richard Blanco and Cecilia Vicuña

  • Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2014
  • Time: 6:00pm – 8:00pm
  • Location: 7 E. 12th St., Room 321
  • RSVP here.

Poet and multidisciplinary artist Cecilia Vicuña was born and raised in Chile. In her poems, she engages themes of language and memory, with particular attention to decay and exile. As art historian Roberto Tejada observed, “Vicuña’s work, at its very essence, is ‘a way of remembering’—as if exile and recall joined to unravel an ‘autobiography in debris’ as one personal story within a larger narrative.” Read more about Cecilia Vicuña at: poetryfoundation.org/bio/Cecilia-vicuna and ceciliavicuna.org.

Richard Blanco was born in Madrid and immigrated to the United States as an infant with his Cuban-exile family. He was raised in Miami and earned a BS in civil engineering and MFA in creative writing from Florida International University. In 2013, Blanco was chosen to serve as the fifth inaugural poet of the United States. Blanco performed “One Today,” an original poem he wrote for the occasion, becoming the youngest, first Latino, immigrant, and openly gay writer to hold the honor. Dr. Chris Noutsos, from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, will be giving a guest lecture on the use of the Perl scripting language for the processing of large data sets in Biology.

Dr. Noutsos graduated with a PhD from the renowned Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding in Germany, where he studied Endosymbiosis and the mechanism by which DNA is transferred from the organelles to the nucleus of the cell.

At Cold Spring Harbor, Dr. Noutsos works in the field of computational biology on the iPlant Collaborative project. His aim is to enable bench biologists to use highly complicated software for the analysis of DNA sequences by populating those software via a rich graphical user interface.

Bickel & Brewer DebateThe Bickel & Brewer NYU Global Debate Competition returns in 2014-2015, pitting undergraduate debate teams from all fourteen NYU global sites against one another in a contest that will award prizes totaling $37,000.

The topic for the 2014-2015 Bickel & Brewer Global Debate at NYU will be: “Resolved: The world is safer now than it was a decade ago.”

The Global Debate Program begins this fall semester with the formation of teams, with students registering for the competition in November. NYU faculty, graduate students, and representatives from the Bickel & Brewer Foundation will serve as judges. In the spring semester, “kock-out” rounds will be held at the New York campus and through the use of video teleconferencing connected to other global sites to reduce the field to a group known as the “Sweet 16.” The final rounds on the NYU campus will culminate in the Championship Debate and an awards ceremony with prizes to the top sixteen teams.

Check the program’s website for more information and frequently asked questions, and Register now! Space is limited and participation is on a first come basis.
